A14 Improvement Scheme - Board 14 Fenstanton Pits

A14 Board 14

Description

The A14 Cambridge to Huntingdon Improvement Scheme was led by MOLA-Headland Infrastructure (a consortium of Museum of London Archaeology and Headland Archaeology) and was funded by National Highways. These interpretation boards were installed by Cambridgeshire County Council with Oxford Archaeology East as part of a project funded by National Highways.

One of the more unusual discoveries made during the course of the scheme was the remains of a woolly mammoth and a woolly rhinoceros. Discovered in 2018 during deep gravel extraction the bones along with other environmental evidence surviving provide insight into the climate and environment from Ice Age Fenstanton.

This board also focusses on the wildlife of the county wildlife site at Fenstanton Pits. The site has two main bodies of water, both former gravel pits extracted during the early 20th century, and is a particular haven for dragonfly with at least 17 species on record.
