Central Park

Central Park Gates

Central Park first opened in 1877 and is city’s most prestigious park.

In 2002 it was awarded a Heritage Lottery Fund grant of £630,000, enabling major improvement works to be done to preserve the integrity of the original Victorian design and landscape.

It has a number of facilities for visitors to enjoy which include the Willow Café, a paddling pool and sandpit, a bird aviary, tennis courts, croquet lawn and bowling greens.

There are also many events which take place in the park each year which range from Junior Park Run to Teddy Bear’s Picnics and Dementia Walks.

Green Flag

Central Park has won the Green Flag award.

The Green Flag Award scheme recognises and rewards well managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of recreational outdoor spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world.

Central Park’s latest Green Flag Management plan is available here.
